‘Parents, teachers have a major role to play in helping students'
Teachers should be imparted counselling skills, says psychology professor

VISAKHAPATNAM: A host of factors are leading to students committing suicide and ragging is one of them. In helping students overcome their emotional problems at various stages parents and teachers have a major role to play, says Professor of Psychology of Andhra University M.V.R. Raju. Parents should monitor problems relating to health, education, relationships and career and, if they fail to deal with them effectively, should consult a psychologist, he suggests.
Deprivation, maladjustments, troubled family ties, besides academic performance are some of the factors that might cause suicidal tendencies. The recent jumping to death of a student of a corporate college after she had lost her parents in a stalker's attack is a case in point.
Educational institutions also can play a key role and should have professional counsellors.
Based on his experience, he says, many teachers in schools across the spectrum do not fulfil all the criteria for qualified teachers owing to inadequacies in the teaching of psychology as a subject in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) course.
To overcome this, teachers should be imparted counselling skills by organising workshops by qualified persons, he suggests. Alternately, teachers may take a course in psychology to help them understand the physical, emotional, cognitive, social and moral development issues and challenges. Schools and corporate colleges hardly have counsellors and even when present only deal with academic matters, he observes.
Prof. Raju, a behaviour therapist, is of the view that counsellors are required right from primary school to junior colleges and professional colleges. Some schools, like one in MVP Colony in Visakhapatnam, employ professional counsellors.
Those running educational institutions, industries and other private organisations are yet to grasp the importance of counselling, he feels.
There are number of techniques and skills approved in the process of counselling. A trained professional psychologist can advise therapies such as behaviour therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), rational emotive therapy (RET), family therapy and relaxation techniques.
